From Curiosity to Combat: My Journey into Muay Thai

by Serpico Arriaga - IJC Muay Thai Head Coach

I never imagined that walking into a gym for a casual workout would lead me to a life of fighting, traveling, and self-discovery. When I first stumbled upon Muay Thai, I knew nothing about it. I wasn’t looking for a career in combat sports, let alone 26 fights, and journeys across Thailand, Cambodia, and the U.S. But life has a funny way of surprising you.

The First Steps:
Like many people, I started Muay Thai on a whim. Maybe it was boredom, maybe I just needed to shake up my routine, but one day, I found myself in a gym staring at heavy bags and fighters practicing their craft. I signed up for a class, figuring it would be a good way to get in shape. What I didn’t expect was how much I’d fall in love with the art of eight limbs. The first weeks were grueling. Learning to throw punches, elbows, knees, and kicks felt foreign, and every muscle in my body screamed after each session. But there was something addictively satisfying about the process. Muay Thai wasn’t just a workout; it was a challenge that forced me to push past my limits, both physically and mentally.

The First Fight:
Months turned into years, and with consistent training, I started to feel confident in my skills. My coach encouraged me to take my first fight, a prospect that terrified and exhilarated me at the same time. I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but I trusted my team. That first fight was a whirlwind. The adrenaline, the crowd, the sheer intensity of standing across from an opponent ready to test my limits—it was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. I didn’t just survive; I thrived and won the fight. From then on Win or lose, I knew I was hooked.

The Road to Thailand:
As my passion for Muay Thai grew, so did my hunger to learn more. I’d heard stories about Thailand—the birthplace of Muay Thai—and how training there was unlike anything else. So, I took a leap of faith, packed my bags, and headed to the Land of Smiles. Training in Thailand was a transformative experience. The camps were grueling, the trainers demanding, but the authenticity and culture surrounding the sport were humbling. I fought under the lights in Thailand’s bustling stadiums, surrounded by fans who lived and breathed Muay Thai. Every fight there felt like a rite of passage, teaching me not only about the sport but about myself.

Competing Across the Globe:
Thailand opened doors I never dreamed of. Each bout taught me something new—not just about technique but about resilience, strategy, and heart. One of the most surreal moments was fighting in Thailand. The energy of the crowd, the ancient cultural backdrop, and the realization of how far I’d come hit me hard. This wasn’t just a hobby anymore; it was a way of life.

Lessons Learned:
Reflecting on this journey, I can hardly believe how far Muay Thai has taken me. It’s more than a sport; it’s a teacher, a challenge, and a passport to adventures I never thought possible. I’ve learned discipline, humility, and the value of hard work. I’ve discovered the strength to face fears head-on and the courage to keep going even after setbacks. Most importantly, I’ve found a community of fighters, coaches, and fans who share the same passion.

What’s Next?
The journey is far from over. Whether it’s stepping into the ring for fight #27, coaching others, or just continuing to grow as a martial artist, Muay Thai will always be a part of my life. To anyone considering trying something new, whether it’s Muay Thai or another passion, my advice is simple: take the leap. You never know where it might lead you. For me, it led to an extraordinary life I never could have imagined—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
